The History of Eddie Bauer

Eddie Bauer opened his first store in Seattle in 1920. The twenty-one-year-old operated “Eddie Bauer’s Tennis Shop” from the back of a hunting and fishing store. He expanded the store to include hand-made golf clubs and fishing tackle, eventually changing the name to Eddie Bauer’s Sport Shop.

An avid outdoorsman, Bauer developed hypothermia during a winter fishing trip. The experience inspired him to develop the first quilted goose down-insulated jacket in the United States, the Skyliner. The Skyliner continues to influence Eddie Bauer soft shell jackets to this day. 

World War II saw the US Army Air Corps commission Bauer to develop flight parkas to combat the cold at high altitudes. He also supplied the army with sleeping bags, backpacks, and pants. After the war, he issued his first mail-order catalog and began selling women’s clothing.

Bauer retired in 1968. By 1987, the company that bears his name introduced the “all week long” concept, providing women with clothing they could wear throughout the week as well as on the weekends. The company launched its website in 1996. In 2013, Eddie Bause joined the Otis Sustainability Alliance, a partnership that advances social, economic, and environmental sustainability in the fashion industry.
