The Caterpillar Story

Caterpillar was established by two former business rivals, Daniel Best and Benjamin Holt. Best patented a portable grain cleaner in 1871 and held the rights to the “Rough and Ready” steam traction engine. Holt developed the “Old Betsy,” an engine that would prove the inspiration for all of today’s mass-produced tracked machines. In 1925, Holt Manufacturing Co. and CL Best Tractor merged to form the Caterpillar Tractor Company.

Caterpillar equipment helped build the Golden Gate Bridge, the Hoover Dam, and the England-to-France Chunnel. The company provided support equipment to the allies in World War II, and its engines provided power for the 1969 Apollo 11 moon mission. More recently, Caterpillar equipment helped recovery efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. In 2018, Caterpillar dealers used their equipment to help rescue people while Hurricane Harvey raged.
